Budget Snub for Ladakh, MP Raises Alarm

Ladakh MP Hanifa Jan has expressed grave concerns over a significant reduction in the Union Territory’s budget allocation for the current fiscal year. According to Jan, the central government has slashed Rs 976 crore from Ladakh's budget, which she claims could have severe repercussions on the region’s development and infrastructure projects.

Speaking at a press conference, Jan accused the central government of neglecting the unique challenges faced by Ladakh due to its harsh climate and geographical remoteness. She highlighted how the region's fragile ecology and lack of connectivity demand higher budgetary support, not cuts.

“The reduced allocation undermines our ability to address pressing issues such as healthcare, education, and road infrastructure,” Jan stated. She added that this budgetary decision has raised questions about the government’s commitment to Ladakh’s integration and progress after its elevation to a Union Territory in 2019.

Experts have echoed her concerns, warning that such cuts could slow down critical projects, including those related to solar energy and tourism, which are key to Ladakh’s economic growth. Opposition parties have also criticized the move, labeling it as “step-motherly treatment” towards the region.

While the government has yet to issue a formal clarification, sources suggest the allocation was adjusted based on project completions from the previous year. However, critics argue that Ladakh’s needs require a more proactive approach.

As public outrage grows, calls for restoring the funds are becoming louder, with many urging the central government to reconsider its priorities for the region.
