Child labour is a serious issue faced by India. Child labor is a menace. The entire world including our country has rendered great efforts to bring Child labour down.
Today is June 12, World Day Against Child Labour is an occasion to promote awareness of child labour exploitation around the world and call for action.
We need to bear in mind that Child labour refers to the employment of children in work that deprives them of their childhood, interferes with their education, and is mentally, physically, socially, or morally dangerous and harmful.
The expert pulse is India has one of the world’s most well-articulated legal frameworks against child labour, but enforcement and accountability lag behind.
According to a 2021 report by the International Labour Organization (ILO) and UNICEF, 160 million children worldwide are caught in the web of child labour, representing a distressing statistic of one in 10 children.
Analyses of data from PLFS 2018/19 conducted as part of this report reveal that the estimated number of children in child labour in India ranged from 1.8 million (0.7 per cent of all children aged 5–17 years) using the national definition to 3.3 million (1.3 per cent of children) using the most comprehensive .
It is heartning Since 2000, the number of children in child labour has been reduced by over 100 million, a promising decrease which proves that the world has a “blueprint” to end child labour. Much work remains, however.
We too as Indians should make every possible effort to end child labour.
