Glaciers are integral part of our nature and environment. They are also key source of fresh water and feeding our water bodies. The degradation of nature especially rising temperatures are melting our glaciers fast. This is giving rise to multiple challenges.

By Definition, A glacier is a large, slow-moving mass of ice formed from accumulated snow, often found in polar or mountainous regions.

Glaciers are crucial for global water supply, sea level regulation, and climate moderation, supporting ecosystems, agriculture, and biodiversity, making them vital natural resources.

We as citizens of world need to do everything to protect the glaciers.

It is much worrying to note that Glaciers lost an estimated 273 billion tonnes of ice annually from 2000 to 2023, making them the second-largest contributor to rising sea levels, according to a new study.

The total global glacier mass loss over this period amounts to 6.54 trillion tonnes, contributing 18 millimetres (mm) to global sea-level rise. The annual rate of sea-level rise attributed to glacier melt was 0.75 mm per year, the study, published in the journal Nature, noted.

In Kashmir too the glaciers are facing degradation.

The Need of the hour is to protect the glaciers for survival of humanity.
