New Delhi, 28 June 2025:
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted a long awaited rainy spell for Delhi NCR, providing relief from the ongoing heat, and has issued an orange alert for five districts in Kerala.
The IMD warns of isolated, extremely heavy rainfall today along with strong winds gusting between 40 and 50 km/h in the districts of Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Idukki, Malappuram, and Wayanad in Kerala. The Incois predict high waves in coastal areas. For the remaining districts, yellow alerts are still in effect. Many areas had to close their schools as a result of yesterday's rain, which caused extensive flooding, uprooted trees, and a tragic drowning in Malappuram.
Strong westerly winds, merging air currents, and a developing low pressure area over the Bay of Bengal are the main drivers of the current weather, IMD officials warned. Heavy rainfall and active monsoon conditions are predicted to persist in the area until at least July 3rd. Due to the risk of tidal surges and squally weather, Kerala State Disaster Management has cautioned fishermen against going out to sea. Meanwhile, the intense heatwave may finally end in Delhi NCR.
With an 89 percent chance of light showers with a total of about 2.8 mm, the IMD predicts sporadic rain and thunderstorms today. It is anticipated that temperatures, which have been around 40°C, will slightly drop to the low 30s, providing much needed respite from the extreme heat and humidity.
"This is an unusual early June rain pattern," stated an IMD spokesperson. Even though the humidity is still high, the showers will be soothing and help cool the heat. As the monsoon moves across the subcontinent, analysts observe that these weather changes are becoming more frequent. Residents are asked to get ready appropriately. Communities in flood prone areas of Kerala are advised to remain vigilant and refrain from visiting hills and bodies of water. Even though the rain helps Delhi, sporadic downpours can result in waterlogging during rush hour.
Authorities in both areas have increased readiness as monsoon patterns worsen; in Kerala, flood warnings have been issued, and in Delhi, waterlogging patrols have been launched. As the season goes on, residents are urged to take the appropriate safety measures and pay attention to official updates.
