Early marriage is a burning issue in many parts of the world, but the menace of late marriages is hitting the valley of Kashmir very badly.

The trend of late marriage in Kashmir would have been improbable just a generation ago. However, in the last few decades, the outlook and circumstances have changed, reflecting a society moving out of its traditional ways of life.

According to sociologists, this shift foretells social upheaval as more Kashmiri youth opt out of an institution that has conventionally defined social and gender relations.

Late marriages have, in fact, become a norm here.

A few years back ,

A study by senior sociologists at the University of Kashmir found that the average age of marriage for females has risen from 20.7 to 27.83 years, while for males, it has increased to 31.53 years from 23.63 years.

The social fabric of Kashmiri society, tough economic circumstances, and rising career aspirations are among the main reasons behind this phenomenon.

Experts attribute it to varied factors, including increased education and employment opportunities, changing societal values, and the growing influence of modernization.

Furthermore, the pressure to achieve financial stability before marriage and the desire for independence among young people are also contributing to the trend. This shift has significant implications for the social structure and family dynamics in Kashmir, warranting closer examination and consideration.
