Rivers are treasures of humanity. We need rivers to continue life on this planet earth. Pesticides on the otherhand are being increasingly used in agriculture and horticulture.
Pesticides are used in agriculture to control weeds, insect infestation and diseases. There are many different types of pesticides; each is meant to be effective against specific pests. Some examples include: Algaecides to kill and/or slowing the growth of algae.
But pesticides rampant use is damaging rivers worldwide.
A study sometime back led by researchers from The University of Sydney has found that agricultural pesticides leach into the world’s rivers and oceans each year at an alarming rate, damaging a variety of ecosystems.
It was noted that every year, agricultural operations around the world use more than three million tons of pesticides, but not a lot is known about precisely where these toxic chemicals go after they are applied to crops, a press release from The University of Sydney said.
The study looked at where 92 of the most frequently used agricultural pesticides travel after application and found that every year about 77,162 tons of potentially hazardous chemicals leach into aquifers. These pollutants have a damaging effect on freshwater resources and ecosystems.
As a matter of fact, Rivers have multiple uses . They provide fresh water for drinking, irrigation, and industrial use. They are home to a diverse array of plant and animal life. They are used for transportation, allowing goods and people to be moved over long distances. Rivers are a source of hydroelectric power, providing a renewable energy source.
So be it our great country India or any other part of the world we need to understand cruel use of pesticides is damaging our rivers.
The expert pulse is we need to minimize damage caused by pesticides to our rivers.
