Child Rights Panel Urges States to Halt Funding, Close Madrasas

The National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) asks states to stop funding madrasas, citing concerns over education quality and child rights violations across the country.

The National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) has issued a directive to state governments, urging them to halt funding to madrasas and shut down those institutions that fail to meet educational standards. The move is seen as a significant step in addressing concerns about child rights violations within these religious schools, which primarily provide Islamic education.

According to the NCPCR, the existing system in many madrasas is inadequate, with children often not receiving the education guaranteed by the Right to Education Act. The commission has raised issues regarding the lack of standardized curriculum, qualified teachers, and proper infrastructure, which it believes are essential for holistic child development.

The commission's report highlighted the concern that many children in these institutions are being deprived of mainstream education, thus limiting their opportunities for a better future. “Children have the right to a comprehensive education that equips them for modern challenges. Denying them this is a violation of their rights,” an NCPCR official stated.

This recommendation has sparked debate, with critics arguing that shutting down madrasas could disrupt the lives of thousands of children who rely on these institutions for education. Others support the move, stating that it is essential to ensure all children receive quality education.

The states are expected to respond to the NCPCR's directive soon. However, the decision has stirred a broader discussion about the balance between preserving cultural education and ensuring child welfare across India.
