Hollywood icon's family matriarch remembered as loving grandmother who touched countless lives

The entertainment world mourns the loss of Jane Etta Pitt, mother of acclaimed actor Brad Pitt, who passed away at the age of 84. The family confirmed her death through an emotional social media tribute, though the cause of death has not been publicly disclosed.

Jane's granddaughter Sydney Pitt, daughter of Brad's brother Doug, announced the heartbreaking news via Instagram, sharing a collection of cherished family photographs that captured Jane's vibrant spirit throughout her life. The touching tribute painted a picture of a woman whose influence extended far beyond her famous son.

"She taught me how to paint, how to be strong, how to lead with kindness, to love Jesus through everything, and to find joy in the smallest things," Sydney wrote in her heartfelt post. "She made up the silliest games just to make us laugh, and she believed in fairness, in putting others first, and doing good simply because it was the right thing to do."

Born Jane Etta Hillhouse, she married William Alvin Pitt in 1962 after the couple met at Oklahoma Baptist University. Their first child, Brad, was born the following year, making him the eldest of three children. The family initially lived in Tulsa before relocating to Springfield, Missouri, where they built their lives together.

Jane is survived by her husband William, along with her three children: Brad, Doug, and Julie. The family also includes 14 grandchildren, all of whom Sydney noted their grandmother could "keep up with without missing a beat."

Throughout Brad's rise to Hollywood stardom, Jane remained a supportive presence while largely staying out of the spotlight. However, she occasionally made memorable red carpet appearances, including attending the 2012 Academy Awards and the 2014 premiere of "Unbroken," directed by Brad's then-wife Angelina Jolie.

Her pride in her children's philanthropic efforts was evident in a 2018 video for WorldServe International, where she expressed admiration for their charitable work. "I'm very proud of all my children. They see a need and try to step in and fill it," she shared at the time.

As recently as June, Brad publicly acknowledged his mother's daily routine during a screening of his latest film "F1." Speaking to Today show anchor Savannah Guthrie, he said, "I gotta say hi to my mom because she watches you every morning. To Jane Pitt. Love you, Mom," while waving and blowing a kiss toward the camera.

Jane's background as a family counselor seemed to influence her approach to parenting and grandparenting. Sydney's tribute emphasized how Jane's love knew no bounds, noting that "everyone who met her felt it." The family matriarch was described as someone who found joy in simple pleasures and believed in leading through kindness and service to others.

The Pitt family has not yet released an official statement regarding funeral arrangements or memorial services. Brad Pitt himself has remained silent on social media following the news, though sources close to the family describe him as devastated by the loss.

Jane Etta Pitt's legacy extends beyond her famous son to encompass a life devoted to family, faith, and community service. Her passing marks the end of an era for the Pitt family, leaving behind memories of a woman who exemplified grace, strength, and unconditional love for nearly eight and a half decades.
