Cannes 2025: Organisers Clamp Down, Nudity and Oversized Gowns Forbidden on Red Carpet

The 2025 *Cannes Film Festival is in the news — not for its movies, but for a quick and unexpected *fashion crackdown*. In a development that caused shock waves in the fashion community, organizers of the festival have implemented *tough new red carpet guidelines*, prohibiting *nudity, transparent clothing*, and *huge gowns with elaborate trains*.

The goal? As per official releases, it's to "preserve decency" and facilitate a "sweeter red carpet experience" for visitors, photographers, and security personnel. But several in the fashion and cinema sphere are not so sure. This last-minute change has put stylists into a tizzy. A number of stars, including **Halle Berry**, had to alter their carefully arranged attire. Berry, who was initially scheduled to wear an opulent Guarav Gupta gown with a trailing train, had to make a quick change and opted for a simple black-and-white Jacquemus dress instead.

Critics and designers have criticized the ban as stifling and vague. The prohibition against "nudity and transparency" is being seen as a ban on mesh or sheer materials — a staple on red carpets over the last few years. Many are concerned the new regulations unfairly impact *young designers*, models, and influencers who usually use *bold fashion* statements to leave a stamp on Cannes.

On the other hand, others say it's a going back to old-fashioned glamour. Elegance silhouettes, discreet tailoring, and understated luxury ruled the red carpet in its early stages this year — a refreshing change from the revelatory pomp Cannes has become associated with. Nevertheless, the argument continues to rage: is Cannes restricting creativity, or reclaiming sophistication?

The festival, which takes place from *May 13 to May 24*, can be expected to go on demonstrating fashion within these new limits. Whether this step makes other big events follow suit — or sparks a backlash that restores the glamour — only time will tell.

One thing, however, is certain: at Cannes 2025, *less is officially more* — and everyone's not applauding.
