Fawad Khan's 'Abir Gulaal' Gets Global Release Date After Controversy

Film to hit international theaters on August 29 following postponement due to Pahalgam attack fallout

Pakistani heartthrob Fawad Khan's long-awaited Bollywood comeback film 'Abir Gulaal' is finally set to reach audiences, though not in the way originally planned. The romantic drama, now retitled 'Aabeer Gulaal', will release globally on August 29, marking a strategic pivot following months of uncertainty.

The film's journey to the big screen has been anything but smooth. Originally slated for a May 9 release in India, 'Abir Gulaal' faced an indefinite postponement after the tragic Pahalgam terror attack on April 22. The incident sparked widespread industry backlash against Pakistani artists working in Bollywood, with the Federation of Western India Cine Employees (FWICE) calling for a boycott of the film.

"The situation completely changed overnight," revealed an industry insider. "What was supposed to be a celebration of cross-border cinema became a casualty of geopolitical tensions."

The film, which pairs Fawad Khan with Bollywood actress Vaani Kapoor, had been generating considerable buzz before the controversy erupted. Promotional activities were in full swing, including a successful music launch at Dubai's Global Village on April 19 that drew enthusiastic responses from fans and media alike. However, within days of the Pahalgam attack, audio company Saregama pulled the film's songs from circulation, effectively halting all promotional efforts.

Now, the makers are adopting what industry experts call the "overseas-first strategy," following the successful model of recent Punjabi films like 'Sardaar Ji 3'. Diljit Dosanjh's film, which featured Pakistani actress Hania Aamir, was denied an Indian release but went on to earn ₹70.10 crore internationally, becoming the highest-grossing Indian Punjabi film overseas.

"The makers of 'Abir Gulaal' are clearly taking inspiration from 'Sardaar Ji 3's success," noted a trade analyst. "If you can't release in India, maximize your international potential."

Directed by Aarti S Bagdi and produced by Vivek Agrawal, 'Aabeer Gulaal' was shot entirely outside India with an estimated budget between ₹5-10 crore. The romantic comedy represents Fawad Khan's first Bollywood project since 2016's 'Ae Dil Hai Mushkil', making it a significant comeback after a nine-year hiatus from Hindi cinema.

The film's international release strategy comes at a time when cross-border entertainment collaborations face increasing scrutiny. While similar films like 'Chal Mera Putt 4' have found success exclusively in overseas markets, the question remains whether 'Aabeer Gulaal' can replicate that triumph.

As the August 29 release date approaches, 'Aabeer Gulaal' will face direct competition from 'Param Sundari', starring Sidharth Malhotra and Vaani Kapoor, setting up an interesting box office battle in international markets.

For Fawad Khan's legion of fans, particularly in markets like the Middle East, UK, and North America, the global release offers a chance to finally see their favorite star return to the big screen, even if the journey took an unexpected detour.
