Hombale Films has officially completed the principal photography of Kantara: Chapter 1, the much-anticipated prequel to the critically acclaimed 2022 film Kantara. The production, which spanned over 250 shoot days across three years, marks a significant milestone for the studio, signalling its most ambitious cinematic venture to date.
Directed by and starring Rishab Shetty, who also helmed the original, Kantara: Chapter 1 is a sweeping cultural epic rooted in Indian mythology and folklore. To commemorate the wrap, Hombale Films released an exclusive behind-the-scenes video, offering a glimpse into the scale and spirit of the film’s intricate production journey.
He described Kantara: Chapter 1 as “a divine journey, deeply rooted in our culture, brought to life through unwavering dedication, relentless effort, and exceptional team spirit.”
Echoing this sentiment, Hombale Films producer Vijay Kiragandur emphasised the emotional and creative depth of the project, stating, “Kantara: Chapter 1 is unquestionably our most ambitious undertaking to date. The sheer scale from the extensive number of shoot days to the vast manpower required exceeds anything we have previously attempted.”
The project's complexity even prompted the creation of a dedicated studio facility in Karnataka to accommodate expansive and intricately designed palace sets, a decision born out of necessity and vision. “We initially searched for pre-existing infrastructure that could support our requirements, but when we found none adequate, we chose to build our own. This allowed us full creative control and operational efficiency,” Kiragandur stated.
This move exemplifies the production’s commitment to ensuring visual authenticity while maintaining a streamlined workflow, ultimately contributing to the film’s expansive and immersive aesthetic.
The core creative team from the original Kantara returns for this chapter. Music director B. Ajaneesh Loknath, whose evocative compositions played a key role in defining the tonal landscape of the first film, reunites with cinematographer Arvind Kashyap and National Award-winning production designer Vinesh Banglan. Under Rishab Shetty’s multi-dimensional direction, the film aims to elevate its visual and thematic narrative to new heights.
Shetty described the production as “a divine journey inspired by our spiritual roots, realised through relentless collaboration and unyielding dedication.” The prequel seeks to further explore the mythical and philosophical layers that struck a profound chord with audiences worldwide.
Scheduled for release on October 2, 2025, a date of national significance commemorating Mahatma Gandhi’s birth anniversary, Kantara: Chapter 1 will be released in Kannada, Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Bengali, and English. This multi-language release strategy reflects Hombale Films’ intention to extend the film’s cultural impact beyond regional audiences to the global stage.
While acknowledging the commercial aspirations of the project, Kiragandur reaffirmed its deeper purpose. “This film is not merely entertainment; it is a celebration of India’s cultural and spiritual legacy. We are driven by the belief that stories rooted in authenticity will resonate with audiences across borders.”
As anticipation builds, Kantara: Chapter 1 stands poised to become more than a film it represents a convergence of tradition, artistry, and narrative ambition. With a cast and crew deeply invested in preserving heritage through cinematic expression, Hombale Films is positioning the project as a cornerstone of contemporary Indian cinema.
In an era where pan-Indian storytelling continues to gain traction, Kantara: Chapter 1 may well redefine the landscape not by emulating the West, but by elevating the East.
