The grisly find of the body of actress Humaira Asghar Ali in her Karachi flat this week has shocked the entertainment industry in Pakistan, with investigating officers claiming that the actress had been dead for about nine months when her body was discovered.
The 32-year-old actress was discovered in her rented flat on the fourth floor of a building in Ittehad Commercial, Phase VI, after her landlord filed a complaint over unpaid rent dating back to 2024. When police broke open the locks to enter the property on Tuesday, they found her remains in what Karachi Police Surgeon Dr. Summaiya Syed described as a "very advanced stage of decomposition."
What has stunned both investigators and the local community is how Humaira's death went unnoticed for such an extended period. According to Deputy Inspector General of Police Syed Asad Raza, call detail records show her last phone conversation took place in October 2024, which aligns with when neighbours last reported seeing her in September-October of that year.
The circumstances surrounding her isolated death paint a picture of complete disconnection from the outside world. Police officials revealed that her electricity had been cut off in October 2024 due to non-payment of bills, leaving the apartment without power or alternative lighting sources. The apartment's water supply had also been disconnected, with pipes found dry and rusted. Food items in her home had expired months ago, with investigators noting that jars had rusted and provisions were at least six months past their expiration dates.
The apartment's layout contributed to the delayed discovery. The only other flat on her floor was vacant, meaning no neighbours were present to detect any unusual odours. Additionally, one of the balcony doors remained open, which helped dissipate any smell that might have alerted others to the tragedy. By the time neighbours returned to the building in February this year, any detectable odour had long since faded.
Initially, Humaira's family had refused to claim her body, but her brother Naveed Asghar eventually travelled from Lahore to Karachi to handle the arrangements. Due to the severely decomposed state of the remains, authorities conducted a DNA test for identification before releasing the body to the family.
Naveed explained that his sister had moved to Karachi from Lahore approximately seven years ago and had gradually distanced herself from the family, visiting only occasionally. In recent years, she hadn't returned home for nearly a year and a half. "We were shocked when we learned about Humaira," he said, adding that their father had initially suggested she could be buried in Karachi if there was an emergency.
Humaira's last social media post has also attracted attention to the tragedy. Her final Instagram update was posted on September 30, 2024, and she appears in an orange salwar suit with the text "Classic can hardly ever go out of fashion!!" The post has since turned viral, with the fans leaving tributes, and they are shocked by the news.
Humaira Asghar Ali is an actress who started her work in the entertainment industry in 2015, having finished her official education in Visual and Performing Arts at the National College of Arts in Lahore. She has played supporting parts in some television programs such as Just Married, Ehsaan Faramosh, Guru, and Chal Dil Mere. Her film credits include "Jalaibee" (2015) and "Love Vaccine" (2021).
She gained wider recognition in 2022 when she joined the reality show "Tamasha Ghar" on ARY Digital and received an award for Best Emerging Talent & Rising Star at the National Woman Leadership Awards in 2023.
According to the police, there was no foul play involved in her death as the apartment had all doors locked on the inside. The case signifies the solitude that may be present in an urban area and the community support system of those working or living alone.
