The 'Prince of Darkness' who helped pioneer heavy metal music passed away surrounded by family.

Ozzy Osbourne, the legendary frontman of Black Sabbath who became synonymous with heavy metal music and rock's wildest excesses, has died at age 76. The news was confirmed by his family on Tuesday, just weeks after an emotional farewell concert in his hometown of Birmingham.

"He was with his family and surrounded by love,"the family statement read. "We ask everyone to respect our family privacy at this time."

Osbourne's death marks the end of an era for rock music. Born John Michael Osbourne in Birmingham, he rose from working-class roots to become one of music's most recognisable figures, earning the nickname "Prince of Darkness" for his theatrical stage presence and controversial antics.

As Black Sabbath's lead vocalist, Osbourne helped create the blueprint for heavy metal in the early 1970s. The band's dark, heavy sound and apocalyptic lyrics influenced countless musicians and spawned an entire genre. Songs like "Paranoid," "Iron Man," and "War Pigs" remain staples of rock radio decades later.

But it was perhaps his unpredictable behaviour that made Osbourne a cultural icon beyond music. The infamous 1982 incident where he bit the head off a bat during a Des Moines concert became rock folklore. "My mouth was instantly full of this warm, gloopy liquid," Osbourne later recalled, explaining he thought it was a rubber toy. The stunt landed him in the hospital for rabies shots.

His solo career, launched after Black Sabbath fired him in 1979 for his excesses, proved equally successful. Hits like "Crazy Train" and "Mr. Crowley" showcased his distinctive wail and knack for memorable hooks. He sold over 100 million records worldwide across his career.

Despite battling addiction for decades, Osbourne found new fame in the 2000s through the reality TV show "The Osbournes," which offered glimpses into his chaotic family life. The show humanised the man behind the demon persona, revealing a devoted husband and father struggling with everyday problems.

In recent years, Osbourne faced significant health challenges, including a Parkinson's disease diagnosis in 2019. His final performance came at Black Sabbath's "Back to the Beginning" concert on July 5, where 42,000 fans gathered at Birmingham's Villa Park for an emotional farewell.

Seated and visibly frail, Osbourne delivered a heartfelt performance, telling the crowd, "You've got no idea how I feel. Thank you from the bottom of my heart." The concert, which raised $290 million for charity, saw the original Black Sabbath lineup reunite for the first time in 20 years.

Tributes poured in from across the music world. Metallica called him a "hero, icon, pioneer," while Aston Villa FC, his beloved football club, noted his "special connection" to his Birmingham roots.

Osbourne is survived by his wife Sharon and six children. His legacy as heavy metal's most enduring showman and a genuine musical pioneer remains unquestioned, having influenced generations of musicians who continue to carry the torch he lit over five decades ago.
