Earlier on Sunday night, there were reports of a shocking yet not-so-surprising split of badminton star Saina Nehwal and husband Parupalli Kashyap after a little over 7 years of marriage.
The bronze medal winner went to social media and posted on Instagram the personal news: " Life takes us in different directions sometimes. Kashyap Parupalli and I have decided to separate after long deliberations and multiple considerations. We are selecting peace, growth and recovery - our own and each other.
Saina and Kashyap's relationship began at the prestigious Pullela Gopichand Academy in Hyderabad, where both trained during their formative years. What started as a friendship between two promising shuttlers gradually blossomed into romance, with the pair dating for over a decade before tying the knot in December 2018.
Their wedding was a celebration not just of their union but of Indian badminton itself, as the sport's two most recognisable faces came together. The ceremony was attended by prominent figures from the badminton fraternity and was seen as the coming together of Indian badminton's power couple.
While both athletes carved their paths to success, their journeys remained intertwined. Saina's rise to international prominence was meteoric; she became the first Indian woman to win an Olympic badminton medal with her bronze at the 2012 London Games, achieved a world No. 1 ranking in 2015, and collected 24 international titles throughout her career.
Kashyap, meanwhile, created his legacy by becoming the first Indian male shuttler in 32 years to win Commonwealth Games gold in 2014. He also broke new ground as the first Indian man to reach the Olympic quarterfinals in badminton at the 2012 Summer Games, achieving a career-high world ranking of No. 6 in 2013.
During the previous years, their bond transcended to marriage as Kashyap quit competitive games to become a coach. Having turned professional in 2024, he came to the role of coaching Saina in her later years of her career and moved on to a more strategic advisor rather than a sparring partner.
This switch worked wonders for Saina and was seen as the return to her previous form as she won some matches with Kashyap, which included a formidable win over P.V. Sindhu at the 2019 National Championships. Through continuous injuries, such as chronic arthritis, however, she has been restricted in her competition; her most recent match as a professional was in June 2023.
In her Instagram statement, Saina emphasised the mutual nature of their decision and requested privacy during this difficult time. "I'm grateful for the memories and wish nothing but the best moving forward. Thank you for understanding and respecting our privacy during this time," she concluded.
Notably, Kashyap has remained silent on the matter, though social media activity suggests he was in the Netherlands attending the Awakenings Festival just hours before Saina's announcement.
The separation marks the end of one of Indian sports' most celebrated partnerships. Together, they represented the face of Indian badminton's golden generation, inspiring countless young athletes to pursue excellence in the sport.
As both athletes move forward separately, their contributions to Indian badminton remain intact. Saina's trailblazing achievements and Kashyap's groundbreaking victories will continue to inspire future generations, even as their chapter together comes to a close.
The badminton community and fans across India have expressed support for both players, respecting their decision and hoping for their continued well-being in their respective journeys ahead.
