After over 30 years of ruling Bollywood hearts, Shah Rukh Khan has finally received his first National Film Award, sharing the Best Actor honor with Vikrant Massey at the 71st National Film Awards announced on Thursday. The King of Bollywood was recognized for his powerful performance in the 2023 blockbuster "Jawan," directed by Atlee.

The achievement marks a significant milestone for the 59-year-old superstar, who despite winning 14 Filmfare Awards and receiving the Padma Shri in 2005, had never claimed cinema's most prestigious national honor until now. Khan shares the Best Actor award with Vikrant Massey, who was celebrated for his compelling portrayal in "12th Fail," the biographical drama that also won Best Feature Film.

Equally momentous was Rani Mukerji's first National Award win for Best Actress, earned through her emotionally charged performance in "Mrs. Chatterjee vs Norway." The film, based on a true story of an Indian mother's legal battle against the Norwegian child welfare system, showcased Mukerji's range as an actress after nearly three decades in the industry.

In her acceptance statement, Mukerji dedicated the award to mothers worldwide, saying, "I dedicate my National Award to all the incredible mothers of this world. There is nothing like a mother's love and her ferocity to protect her own."

The 71st National Film Awards celebrated excellence across Indian cinema's diverse landscape. "12th Fail," based on the inspiring story of IPS officer Manoj Kumar Sharma, dominated the ceremony by winning both Best Feature Film and Best Actor for Massey. The film's remarkable 100-day theatrical run proved its impact with audiences nationwide.

Technical excellence was also recognized, with "Animal" receiving multiple awards including Best Music Direction for Background Score and Best Sound Design. The film's composer Harshavardhan Rameshwar and sound team were acknowledged for their contribution to Sandeep Reddy Vanga's controversial yet successful project.

The awards highlighted the strength of regional cinema, with "Kathal: A Jackfruit Mystery" winning Best Hindi Film, while "Sam Bahadur" starring Vicky Kaushal earned recognition in multiple technical categories including Best Makeup and Best Costume Design.

Karan Johar's "Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani" was honored as the Best Popular Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment, acknowledging its success in delivering family-friendly content that resonated with mainstream audiences.

For Shah Rukh Khan, this recognition comes at a career peak following his successful 2023 comeback with three blockbusters - "Pathaan," "Jawan," and "Dunki." The National Award validates his enduring appeal and acting prowess beyond commercial success.

The ceremony, held at the National Media Centre in New Delhi, was presided over by Union Information & Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw. These awards honor the best of Indian cinema from 2023, celebrating storytelling that combines commercial appeal with artistic merit.

As both Khan and Mukerji finally claim their first National Awards, their victories represent not just personal achievements but milestones for an industry that continues to evolve while honoring its most dedicated performers.
