Mumbai May 20 2025 : As Netflix India’s royal rom-com “The Royals” garners attention for its opulence and ensemble cast, reactions to the show’s storyline and character dynamics remain deeply divided.
Despite praise for its lavish sets and costume design, several viewers and critics have pointed to a lack of narrative depth. Questions have also been raised about the on-screen chemistry between leads Ishaan Khatter and Bhumi Pednekar, as well as the frequency of shirtless scenes involving Khatter.
In a recent interview with India Today, director Priyanka Ghose addressed the criticism, revealing that Pednekar’s casting came on Netflix’s recommendation. “They are both such powerful actors,” and “It was refreshing to see them in glamorous roles that defy their typical filmography.”she says .
Ghose acknowledged the polarised response, stating, “If it didn’t work for some, I’ll strive to do better. But many have appreciated the show and their pairing.”
On the criticism of excessive shirtless shots, she clarified that the scenes were part of the original script and were discussed extensively during production. “Ishaan was always mindful of the balance,” she further added.
Fans also reacted to a brief cameo by legendary actress Zeenat Aman, wishing for a more substantial role. “Her appearance was always meant to be short. That’s the nature of cameos by icons — audiences always want more,” said Ghose.
Set in the fictional princely town of Morpur, The Royals follows Fizzy (Ishaan Khatter), a reluctant royal thrust into leadership after his father's death. Bhumi Pednekar plays Sophia, a modern entrepreneur who proposes transforming the family palace into a luxury heritage stay.
