Tom Cruise's new adventure as Ethan Hunt in Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning made a spectacular splash at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival, with an overwhelming standing ovation that lasted almost eight minutes, highlighting the long-lasting popularity of the franchise and Cruise's star power. The world premiere, which took place at the Grand Théâtre Lumière on May 14, was a movie-going experience characterized by great expectation and ended with a sentimental goodbye to one of action cinema's most legendary heroes.

Coming in style, Cruise had a dramatic arrival on a motorcycle, clad in all black, before switching to a traditional tuxedo for the red carpet. The opening night came with a live 40-piece orchestra playing the iconic Mission: Impossible theme, and it had an exciting vibe to start the evening. Cruise was joined on the red carpet by director Christopher McQuarrie, who directed the previous four films in the franchise, and a posse of stars such as Simon Pegg, Ving Rhames, Vanessa Kirby, Hayley Atwell, Pom Klementieff, and Esai Morales.

The movie itself is an action-packed blockbuster with Cruise's signature death-defying practical stunts. One highlight sequence that left the Cannes crowd gasping was a three-minute knife fight on a submarine, in which Cruise did the intense scene in just boxer briefs, demonstrating his physical commitment at 62. The film's climax also features stunning underwater acrobatics, testing the limits of action cinema. Although the film's duration and intensity made some audience members tired, the overall reaction was one of amazement and appreciation for Cruise's openness and dedication.

Following the screening, the audience erupted into a prolonged standing ovation, a testament to the film’s impact and Cruise’s legacy. Visibly moved, Cruise expressed his gratitude, reflecting on his 30-year journey with the Mission: Impossible franchise. He praised McQuarrie’s visionary direction, noting how the filmmaker continuously expanded the series beyond expectations. The emotional moment was shared with the entire cast and crew, highlighting the collaborative effort behind the film.

Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning is overwhelmingly perceived as the final chapter of Ethan Hunt's story, with its title and plot indicating a reckoning and conclusion for the character. The film also follows the franchise tradition of international spy adventures, complex plots, and mind-bending stunts, which promises supporters an exciting conclusion.

The Cannes debut also invited comparison with Cruise's last blockbuster Top Gun: Maverick, which had done the same in 2022 with a six-minute ovation and dazzling aerial maneuvers. Although Final Reckoning might struggle to reach Top Gun's heights at the box office-particularly in the wake of the somewhat unevenly received commercial success of the last Mission: Impossible film-Cruise's knack for producing a hits-with-audience piece is beyond dispute.

Scheduled for a worldwide release later in May 2025, the movie will release in Indian cinemas on May 17, in various languages such as English, Hindi, Telugu, and Tamil. Fans globally look forward to the chance to see what can be the last mission of Ethan Hunt, an actor who has become synonymous with high-stakes action and cinematic bravado.

Overall, Tom Cruise's Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning delighted Cannes crowds with its thrilling action and emotional depth and also reconfirmed Cruise as one of Hollywood's most committed and longest-running stars. The Cannes standing ovation was a worthy tribute to a franchise that has set the parameters for the contemporary action genre for almost three decades.
