Urvashi's fashion blunder at Cannes: Controversy under the guise of glamour

The Cannes International Film Festival is synonymous with the dazzling presence of stars, the exhibition of new clothes and accessories. Every year, several actresses from Bollywood set foot there, and try to showcase their fashion identity on that stage. This year too, Bollywood actress Urvashi Rautela appeared on the red carpet of Cannes in that sequence. However, as her presence caught the eye, she also had to face criticism.

On the first day, she came in a colorful off-shoulder gown. There were colorful crafts on the black gown. She wore a colorful crown on her head, and carried a bird-shaped clutch bag, which cost about four and a half lakh rupees. She had heavy makeup and colorful eyeshadow on her eyes. At a time when the no-makeup look is at the peak of popularity these days, Urvashi's chic outfit caught the eyes of many differently. Many people think that this outfit is an attempt to stand out from the trend and present herself differently. But social media is getting mixed reactions. Some praise it, while others say that such an outfit does not suit an international stage like Cannes.

On the second day, Urvashi arrived in a classic black gown. Her hair tied in a bun, big earrings on her ears, dark makeup on her face, and a pink clutch in her hand—all of it was a manifestation of a mature fashion sense. But on that day, an unexpected incident happened. While raising her hand to the paparazzi, the camera caught her, and a torn part of her gown on her left shoulder was clearly visible. Within moments, the picture went viral on social media. Trolls started, some said, “Urvashi in a torn gown!”, while others mocked and wrote, “Is this Bollywood style?” However, many praised her for standing in front of the camera with confidence without flinching at such a moment.

 After this incident, the question comes to the fore once again – the excessive curiosity and trolling tendency of society regarding women's clothing. Can an accident or a minor lapse be enough reason to subject someone to sarcasm? Clothing is only an external appearance, more important than that is the inner strength and intelligence of an artist.

Urvashi may not have gone to Cannes this year to promote a film, but she has clearly highlighted her style statement. She has expressed multiple aspects of herself in two different outfits over two days. Although that path was discussed, sometimes praised, sometimes criticized – still she has presented herself with courage, which makes her different.

Fashion means an exam, and you cannot always succeed in every exam. But if you maintain confidence even in that failure, then that is the real victory. Urvashi has shown that confidence. Even in the midst of controversy, she has proven that fashion is not only expressed in clothes, but also in behavior and attitude.
