The Telugu film industry mourned the loss of one of its most versatile performers as veteran actor and former MLA Kota Srinivasa Rao passed away on Sunday morning at his residence in Hyderabad. The 83-year-old actor had been suffering from prolonged illness before breathing his last in the early hours.

Rao, who was born on July 10, 1942, in Kankipadu village near Vijayawada, had just celebrated his 83rd birthday three days before his demise. His death marks the end of an era for Telugu cinema, where he carved out a unique niche as a character actor who could effortlessly switch between villainous roles and comedy.

Rao, before becoming a household name in the Telugu film industry, was initially a theatre actor. He moved to films in the year 1978 as he made his first film, Pranam Khareedu. It was, however, his role in the film Pratighatana, which has received top ratings as one of the critically acclaimed films, that made him a household name in the industry to reckon with.

His performance in his role as Kasaiah was a career breakthrough as he managed to make the complicated character sound authentic and deep. With this performance, he received a lot of opportunities and became one of the most wanted character actors in South Indian films.

Over his illustrious career spanning more than four decades, Rao appeared in over 750 films across multiple languages, including Telugu, Tamil, Hindi, Kannada, and Malayalam. His versatility was legendary; he could be menacing as a villain in one film and have audiences rolling with laughter in another.

One of his most memorable collaborations was with fellow actor Babu Mohan, another former MLA. Together, they formed a comedy duo that became hugely popular in Telugu cinema, delivering countless memorable performances that entertained generations of moviegoers.

Rao's filmography includes several classics such as "Gaayam," "Shiva," "Yamaleela," "Aha Naa Pellanta!," "Little Soldiers," and "Aa Naluguru." His ability to work alongside every major star of his era, from Chiranjeevi to the younger generation, earned him respect across the industry.

Rao's contributions extended far beyond the entertainment world. He joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and successfully contested elections, serving as the MLA from Vijayawada East constituency in the erstwhile united Andhra Pradesh from 1999 to 2004. His political career demonstrated his commitment to public service and his connection with the people of his constituency.

His multifaceted personality was also evident in his involvement in various social causes and his continued engagement with theatre even after achieving film stardom.

Rao's exceptional contribution to Indian cinema was recognised at the highest level when he was awarded the Padma Shri in 2015, India's fourth-highest civilian honour. This recognition was a testament to his decades of dedicated service to the arts and his role in enriching Indian culture through his performances.

He also received numerous other accolades throughout his career, including nine Nandi Awards from the Andhra Pradesh government, cementing his status as one of the most accomplished actors in South Indian cinema.

The news of Rao's passing sent shockwaves through the Telugu film industry. Actors, directors, and colleagues remembered him not just as a talented performer but as a gentleman who maintained his dignity and professionalism throughout his career.

An interesting footnote in his career was his appearance alongside other political figures in the film "Tegimpu," where he acted with BJP leader Ale Narendra and Congress leader Dronam Raju Satyanarayana, with Bhanuchandar in the lead role.

As the curtain falls on a remarkable life, Kota Srinivasa Rao leaves behind a legacy that will continue to inspire future generations of actors and entertainers.
