"Congress Lacked Courage to Respond Firmly to Pakistan": Dy CM Eknath Shinde Hits Out

Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde also sharply attacked the Congress party, accusing it of "never having the guts to give a befitting reply to Pakistan" for repeatedly provoking and carrying out terror attacks. Shinde's statement, while appearing in public recently, is part of a wider sentiment among the present ruling coalition that earlier Congress-led governments were unwilling or incapable of replying strongly to cross-border terrorism and security threats.

Shinde, a top Shiv Sena (Shinde faction) leader and one of the most influential figures in Maharashtra politics, has repeatedly placed himself and his party firmly in the camp of those who are hawkish on national security and willing to take firm action.

His remarks are made at a moment when national security and the government's reaction to terrorism are dominant public issues, particularly following recent attacks and rising tensions with Pakistan.

The Deputy Chief Minister's remark is also interpreted as an extension of the political narrative that the present government, both state and central, is firmer and more aggressive in handling Pakistan. Shinde's party, which is now with the BJP, has repeatedly emphasized what it perceives as a stronger and more assertive stance under present leadership as opposed to the Congress era, which they have described as being characterized by caution and restraint.

Shinde's criticism plays upon the public's call for a firm national response to terrorism and appeals to voters who prefer a hard line against Pakistan.

It also helps reinforce his reputation as a leader who, even in light of recent changes in Maharashtra's power dynamics, remains connected to the grass roots and is sensitive to the popular mood on issues of national security.

Although Congressional leaders have long justified their record on the basis of diplomatic and military efforts during their term, the accusation of indecisiveness in the face of successive provocation remains a powerful political theme for their opponents. Shinde's comments will only go to fuel the current debate about India's security policies and the record of previous governments.
