New Delhi, May 1
On the occasion of Labour Day, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge launched a scathing attack on the Narendra Modi-led government, highlighting the growing challenges faced by India’s workforce. He accused the government of neglecting the rights of workers, weakening the MNREGA rural employment scheme, and failing to curb rising unemployment.
In a statement shared on social media and during a public address, Kharge said, “Labour Day is a reminder of the rights and dignity of our workers, but under the BJP regime, labour rights have been diluted, MNREGA funds have been slashed, and joblessness has reached alarming levels.”
He criticized the Centre for what he called “systematic dismantling” of worker welfare mechanisms, adding that contract labour and informal employment have surged, leaving crores without job security or social protection.
“Modi government boasts of development, but it has abandoned the backbone of our economy — the workers,” Kharge asserted, urging voters to demand accountability as the nation moves toward the 2024 general elections.
Kharge also called for the restoration and strengthening of labour laws, increased funding for MNREGA, and comprehensive action to tackle unemployment, particularly among youth and rural communities.
