President Draupadi Murmu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Congress leader Rahul Gandhi have expressed deep grief over the death of 6 people and injuries to over 50 others in a stampede during the annual pilgrimage of Lairai Devi in Shirgaon, Goa.
The President wrote on his Twitter handle, “I am deeply saddened to hear the news of the tragic loss of lives in the Shirgaon stampede in Goa. My condolences to the families of the deceased and I wish the injured a speedy recovery.”
A post from the Prime Minister’s Office said, “We are saddened by the loss of lives in the Shirgaon stampede. My condolences to those who have lost their loved ones. May the injured recover quickly. The local administration is providing all possible assistance to the affected.”
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi wrote, “The news of the death of many devotees and injuries in a stampede during the annual yatra at the Lairai Devi temple is very sad. I express my heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased and pray for the speedy recovery of the injured.”
Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant said, “So far, 6 people have died in the incident and more than 50 have been injured. I went to the spot as soon as I got the news. The injured are being treated. Every year more than 50,000 people participate in this yatra. This accident is very sad. Prime Minister Modi called me and inquired about the incident and assured central assistance.”
After this tragic incident, Chief Minister Sawant went to see the injured at the Goa Medical College. The administration has expressed deep concern over the incident.
