Vizhinjam Port: Kerala's Gateway to Global Trade, Says CM

The commissioning of Vizhinjam International Seaport is a landmark moment for Kerala and Indian maritime ambitions. Called by Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan a "landmark maritime gateway," Vizhinjam is not just another infrastructural initiative-it is a strategic leap that places Kerala at the forefront of international shipping and trade.

India's importers and exporters had been strategically throttled for a long time: with nearly 75% of India's container trade that was going to foreign markets going through foreign ports like Dubai, Singapore, and Colombo. This was at greater logistics costs, took longer to turn-around, and was outside India's control.

Vizhinjam shatters this equation in no uncertain manner. With its near 20-meter natural draft and proximity-just 10 nautical miles-to the vital east-west shipping lanes, the port can now accept the world's largest container vessels directly without relying on costly foreign middlemen. The port's initial success of operations is already being seen.

Even before commissioning, Vizhinjam handled 285 ships and cleared nearly 600,000 TEUs, beating many veteran international ports. Its inclusion in the Mediterranean Shipping Company's Jade Service route from Asia to Europe is a reflection of its rapid ascension as a destination transshipment port. In 2028, when its second phase is finished, Vizhinjam will have at least 3 million TEUs a year capacity, with scope for expansion as demand rises. The economic bonus for Kerala and India is vast.

By reducing foreign port reliance, Vizhinjam can save Indian commerce up to $220 million annually in transshipment fee alone. The port can spur local employment, develop ancillary industries, and position Kerala as a leading node in global supply chains. Its state-of-the-art infrastructure-semi-automation, AI-based vessel management, and smooth connectivity to national roads and a proposed dedicated rail link-guarantees that Vizhinjam is not only internationally competitive, but future-proof.

Chief Minister Vijayan deserves his accolades. Vizhinjam is a golden testimony to the vision of Kerala and India's rising maritime power. It is a model of how strategic investment, technological revolution, and public-private partnership can create new economic frontiers. While the world shipping colossi and global trade arteries expand by navigating Kerala's seashore, Vizhinjam is a living example of the ability of the state and the nation in writing their own destiny in the world economy.
