53 Common Medicines Fail Quality Test

In a major alert, the Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO) has flagged 53 medicines, including the widely used pain reliever, paracetamol, for failing to meet quality standards. The list includes several commonly prescribed medications, sparking concerns over public health and drug safety.

According to the CDSCO report, a total of 48 drugs have been categorized as “Not of Standard Quality.” This means these medications either failed to meet prescribed safety or efficacy benchmarks, potentially posing health risks to users. Paracetamol, one of the most frequently used drugs for fever and pain, is a notable name on the list.

In addition to paracetamol, antibiotics and various over-the-counter drugs used for treating common ailments also failed the quality test. The CDSCO’s inspection involved several pharmaceutical companies, and the results have put the spotlight on the need for stricter quality control measures across India’s drug manufacturing sector.

Pharma experts believe this revelation could lead to the recall of the flagged medicines from the market. Health authorities are advising consumers to remain cautious and consult healthcare providers before continuing the use of these drugs.

The government is expected to take immediate action to ensure only safe and effective medicines remain available to the public. Further investigations are likely to follow, with the aim of improving the quality of medicines produced and sold in India.
