ISRO's Bharatiya Antariksh Station

ISRO has made substantial progress toward establishing the Bharatiya Antariksh Station, which India plans to launch in 2035. This will place India in the rare category of fully independent space stations, expanding its capacities for long-duration human spaceflight and autonomous orbital operations.".

One recent hallmark of this pursuit was the flawless launch of the Space Docking Experiment, also known as the SPADEX, on December 30, 2024. The twin satellites were part of the experiment in demonstrating the critical technology for assembly and servicing the future space station through docking maneuvers. SPADEX marks an important step towards a considerable growth in ISRO's technical capacities.

In parallel, ISRO has been developing sustainable power solutions for the BAS. On January 1, 2024, the organization successfully tested a Polymer Electrolyte Membrane Fuel Cell Power System (FCPS) during the PSLV-C58 mission. This system efficiently generated electricity and produced clean water as a byproduct, demonstrating its potential as a reliable power source for the space station.

The BAS is structured to carry three astronauts for longer periods of time. It has planned to expand capacity in the future. This project shows the seriousness of India toward developing space research capabilities and supporting global scientific studies.

With the success of ISRO at this technological level, it seems the goal of having the Bharatiya Antariksh Station by 2035 will soon be realized and is a huge step ahead in India's space exploration mission.
