Maestro Ilayaraja Faces Temple Discrimination
In an incident raising eyebrows across the nation, BJP-nominated Rajya Sabha MP and musical icon Ilayaraja was allegedly denied access to the sanctum sanctorum of the revered Srivilliputhur temple in Tamil Nadu. The denial has rekindled conversations about caste-based discrimination and the accessibility of sacred spaces, even to prominent personalities.
According to reports, the temple authorities cited “traditional restrictions” to justify their decision, claiming only priests are allowed within the sanctum sanctorum. However, critics argue that the act reflects deep-seated caste prejudices, as Ilayaraja hails from a marginalized community.
The BJP, which has been striving to strengthen its presence in Tamil Nadu, faces a precarious situation. While many within the party refrained from commenting, opposition leaders and activists lambasted the incident, calling it a glaring example of casteism overshadowing faith.
Ilayaraja, known for his humility and devotion, chose not to make any inflammatory remarks, maintaining his characteristic grace. Yet, his silence has only amplified public anger. “This is not just about Ilayaraja. It’s about how our society still grapples with regressive practices,” said social activist Usha Ramanathan.
The controversy has led to demands for systemic reforms in temple management and a reassessment of exclusive traditions that many believe alienate devotees. Tamil Nadu’s temples, which have long been cultural and spiritual hubs, now face scrutiny for perpetuating inequity.
