Sharmila Calls for Modi’s Action on Manipur

The prolonged turmoil in Manipur has brought activist Irom Sharmila back into the spotlight. Known for her 16-year hunger strike against the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA), Sharmila has now appealed directly to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, urging him to intervene and resolve the state’s ongoing crisis.

Sharmila, speaking from her residence in Kodaikanal, emphasized that “only decisive leadership can restore peace” in Manipur. She highlighted the deteriorating human rights situation, citing the displacement of thousands due to ethnic violence and administrative paralysis.

Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge also joined the chorus for intervention, addressing a detailed letter to President Droupadi Murmu. Kharge accused the BJP-led central government of failing to address the situation effectively, resulting in a humanitarian crisis. He appealed to the President to ensure justice for the affected communities and bring the state administration back on track.

The crisis in Manipur, fueled by ethnic tensions between the Meitei and Kuki communities, has left the state in a fragile state of law and order. Experts suggest that only a neutral, comprehensive approach from the Centre can de-escalate the conflict.

Despite repeated calls for action, the silence from the top echelons of the government has been deafening. Civil rights groups and political parties continue to press for immediate action, stressing that the delay is further deepening the scars of the conflict.

With mounting pressure from both citizens and political leaders, all eyes are now on the Prime Minister. Will the Centre finally take responsibility and ensure peace in Manipur?
