Nestled in the northeastern state of Tripura, Unakoti is a serene and lesser-known destination that combines history, spirituality, and adventure. Often overlooked by mainstream tourists, this hidden gem offers a peaceful retreat for those who enjoy trekking and exploring ancient heritage sites.

Unakoti, meaning “one less than a crore,” is famed for its massive rock-cut sculptures and intricate carvings of Hindu deities, believed to be over a thousand years old. The site’s main attraction is a 30-foot-high rock relief of Lord Shiva, surrounded by smaller carvings of gods and goddesses. Visitors can also spot a unique depiction of Lord Ganesha near a small stream, adding to the mystical charm of the place. Despite its historical significance, Unakoti remains tranquil, allowing travelers to soak in its beauty without the usual crowds.

 _Getting There_

Reaching Unakoti is relatively straightforward. The nearest airport is in Agartala, the capital of Tripura. From Agartala, travelers can hire a taxi or take a bus to Dharmanagar, located about 20 kilometers from Unakoti. For those who prefer train travel, Silchar in Assam offers a rail route to Dharmanagar, from where taxis or local buses can reach the site. The journey itself takes visitors through lush landscapes, setting the tone for the scenic experience ahead.

Unakoti isn’t just about historical monuments; it’s also a trekker’s delight. The trek begins at the Unakoti Eco Park, winding through a forested area with well-marked trails. Moderate in difficulty, the trek typically takes 2-3 hours, making it accessible for most travelers. Along the way, trekkers can enjoy the greenery, listen to the birds, and admire small streams and natural clearings that add to the area’s charm.

 _Visitor Tips_

For a smooth and enjoyable visit, travelers should wear comfortable trekking shoes and clothing and carry enough water and snacks, as there are no shops or restaurants near the site. The best time to visit is between October and March, when the weather is pleasant. Respecting local customs and traditions is also important, as Unakoti is not just a tourist spot but a sacred heritage site for the local community.

While exploring Unakoti, visitors get a rare chance to witness history in its most natural form rock carvings that have withstood centuries, set against the backdrop of lush forests and gentle streams. The site offers a perfect blend of cultural immersion, adventure, and solitude, making it a must-visit for anyone traveling to Tripura.

Whether you’re a history buff, a nature lover, or an adventure seeker, Unakoti provides a refreshing escape from crowded tourist destinations, letting you experience the magic of northeastern India in peace.
