Kulgam, July 10: In a lifesaving medical intervention, a 22-year-old man from the Shahoo area of Kulgam was successfully treated for life-threatening gastrointestinal bleeding at District Hospital (DH) Kulgam, thanks to the timely efforts of a skilled medical team.
The patient was brought to the hospital in critical condition after vomiting a large volume of blood and showing signs of severe hypotension. Emergency resuscitation was promptly initiated in the Accident & Emergency Department.
An urgent endoscopy, performed by senior consultant and gastroenterologist Dr. Hakim Mohd Shafi, revealed a large duodenal ulcer with active bleeding from an exposed vein. Dr. Shafi conducted endoscopic sclerotherapy, injecting 20ml of 1:10000 adrenaline at multiple sites, successfully stopping the bleeding.
Hospital officials noted that such advanced procedures are typically carried out at tertiary care centers, making this achievement a landmark for a district-level facility. Dr. Shafi was assisted during the procedure by technicians Ms. Sumira and Mr. Zahoor Ahmad, whose technical support proved invaluable.
The patient is currently stable and recovering in the Medical Ward under observation.
Dr. Syed Masood, the recently appointed Medical Superintendent of DH Kulgam, lauded the team’s swift and professional response. “Our doctors are dedicated and talented. This successful case highlights the potential of District Hospital Kulgam to emerge as one of the top healthcare institutions in the Union Territory,” he said.
The case has earned widespread praise for Dr. Hakim Mohd Shafi, who is being hailed as a leading figure in emergency gastrointestinal care in south Kashmir.
