The first batch of Hajj 2026 pilgrims from India, comprising 371 devotees, departed for Mecca from the Indira Gandhi International Airport in New Delhi, marking the formal beginning of this year’s pilgrimage operations from the country.
The group left on Saturday morning amid emotional scenes as families gathered at the airport to bid farewell to their loved ones embarking on the sacred journey. The departure signals the start of one of the world’s largest annual religious pilgrimages, which sees millions of Muslims travel to Saudi Arabia each year for Hajj.
Officials from the Delhi Hajj Committee were present at the airport to oversee the smooth departure process. Chairperson Kausar Jahan extended her best wishes to the pilgrims and highlighted coordinated arrangements made for their safe and comfortable travel.
“Today marks the first flight of Hajj 2026, with 371 pilgrims embarking on their journey,” she said, adding that authorities have worked to ensure better facilities and smoother coordination this year. She also acknowledged the efforts of multiple agencies involved in managing logistics, travel, and on-ground support.
According to officials, the government and Hajj committees have made extensive arrangements for pilgrims this year, including improved travel coordination, accommodation assistance, and medical support systems. Special teams have been deployed at embarkation points to assist pilgrims during departure formalities.
Pilgrims expressed deep emotion as they began their journey, calling it a once-in-a-lifetime spiritual experience. Many described the moment as fulfilling a lifelong wish, while also praying for peace, unity, and well-being for their families and communities back home.
The departure of this first batch officially marks the commencement of Hajj 2026 operations from India. More flights carrying pilgrims from different states are scheduled to depart in the coming days through various designated embarkation points across the country.
Hajj is one of the five pillars of Islam and a mandatory religious duty for Muslims who are physically and financially able to undertake the pilgrimage at least once in their lifetime.
With the first group now en route, preparations are underway to ensure a smooth and organised pilgrimage season for all Indian pilgrims travelling to Saudi Arabia this year.
