Kulgam, June 11: In a landmark medical achievement, the District Hospital Kulgam successfully managed its first-ever case involving the removal of a large meat bolus lodged in the oesophagus. The complex emergency was resolved through a therapeutic endoscopy, marking a significant milestone in the hospital’s growing capacity to handle advanced gastroenterological procedures.
The patient, 60-year-old Gulam Hassan from Avil village, arrived at the hospital’s Accident & Emergency Department after suffering for five days with an inability to eat and persistent vomiting. Recognizing the seriousness of the condition, the medical team, led by Medical Superintendent Dr. A.G. Raina, immediately began resuscitation with IV fluids and conducted baseline investigations.
Given the critical nature of the obstruction, an emergency therapeutic endoscopy was performed under local anaesthesia. The procedure was carried out by Dr. Hakim Mohd Shafi (Consultant Medicine Gastroenterologist) and Dr. Raies Ahmad Hella (Gastroenterologist), assisted by Mr. Zahoor Ahmad, under the supervision of Dr. Raina.
“The large meat bolus was successfully removed using a snare during endoscopy,” Dr. Raina stated. “The patient was immediately able to swallow water, and a follow-up endoscopy confirmed no major obstruction except for local swelling and inflammation.”
Following the successful intervention, the patient was discharged in stable condition with dietary advice and scheduled for outpatient follow-up. Hospital officials confirmed the final diagnosis as a motility disorder of the oesophagus, which likely contributed to the bolus impaction.
This successful case underscores the growing expertise and readiness of District Hospital Kulgam to handle complex and life-threatening emergencies, further reinforcing its role as a vital healthcare provider in the region.
