A forest ground fire broke out early Thursday evening in Compartment Number 16 of the D.K. Marg area in Kulgam district, sparking alarm among residents and forest authorities.

According to officials, firefighting teams were quickly dispatched to the site and have managed to control nearly 90 percent of the blaze. Efforts are ongoing to fully extinguish the remaining fire pockets, with teams working through challenging terrain and dry conditions.

“We have already controlled about 90 percent of the fire,” a forest official stated. “Teams are on the ground, and the situation is under control, but we are continuing operations to ensure complete safety.”

The cause of the fire remains under investigation. While no casualties or property damage have been reported, officials are evaluating the impact on the local forest ecosystem. Residents have been advised to avoid the affected area until further notice.

This incident adds to growing concerns over the increasing occurrence of forest fires in the region, particularly during dry spells. Authorities are urging the public to report any signs of fire or suspicious activity near forested zones.
