Jammu & Kashmir Sizzles: Record-Breaking Heatwave Grips the Region

Jammu and Kashmir are currently in the grip of an intense heatwave, with both Jammu and Srinagar experiencing their hottest days on record for the season. The Meteorological Department (MeT) has predicted continued hot and dry conditions, with heatwave alerts remaining in effect for isolated areas until at least May 26.

Srinagar, the summer capital, recorded a scorching 34.4°C on Thursday, marking the third-highest May temperature in 133 years for the city. This temperature is a significant 9.0°C above the seasonal average. Similarly, Jammu city registered a blistering 41.4°C, making it the hottest day of the year for the winter capital.

The unusual heat has not spared even the traditionally cooler tourist destinations. Katra recorded a high of 36.2°C, while the picturesque valleys of Pahalgam and Gulmarg also sizzled at 27.8°C and 25.4°C respectively, significantly above their normal temperatures for this time of year. Kokernag also experienced its highest-ever May temperature at 33.3°C.

Authorities have issued advisories urging residents to take necessary precautions against the heat, such as staying hydrated, avoiding direct sunlight during peak hours, and wearing light clothing. School timings in Kashmir have also been adjusted to mitigate the impact of the extreme temperatures on students. The prolonged spell of dry weather and clear skies is attributed to the lack of strong western disturbances over the region. While a brief spell of light rain is possible in isolated areas, particularly in the late afternoons, the overall hot and dry conditions are expected to persist until May 31.
