Kulgam, June 12 – Amid a sharp rise in forest fire incidents across the region, the District Administration of Kulgam has issued a public advisory urging residents, especially those living near forested areas, to remain vigilant and strictly follow safety precautions. The spike in fires has been attributed to an unusually prolonged dry spell that has left vast tracts of forestland highly vulnerable.

According to the administration, the increasing number of fire outbreaks poses a serious threat to the district’s rich biodiversity, forest wealth, and overall ecological balance. In response, authorities have outlined a series of precautionary measures aimed at preventing further damage and ensuring public safety.

The advisory emphasizes the need to avoid all forms of outdoor burning, including the disposal of garbage and agricultural residue, and prohibits lighting of campfires in or around forest zones. It also urges residents not to discard cigarette butts, matchsticks, or any flammable materials in open or forested areas. Additionally, people have been advised to properly manage domestic ash and waste, and to avoid burning dry leaves or vegetation, particularly near fire-prone locations.

The administration has appealed to both locals and tourists to report any suspicious activity or signs of fire to the authorities without delay. Officials stress that cooperation from the public is essential in mitigating risks and preserving the region’s green cover.

“The protection of our green cover is a collective responsibility. Even a small lapse in judgment can result in massive environmental damage,” the advisory noted.

Forest personnel and emergency response teams have been placed on high alert, and surveillance across vulnerable areas has been intensified. The district administration also encourages residents to stay updated through official channels and act responsibly during this period of heightened fire risk.
