Kulgam, August 3: The ongoing encounter in the dense Akhal forests of South Kashmir’s Kulgam district entered its third consecutive day on Sunday, with two militants killed so far and four army personnel injured during the fierce gunfight.

Locals reported that blasts and intermittent gunfire echoed through the night, as security forces kept a tight cordon around the heavily forested area.

The operation, which started on Friday evening, is being described by officials as one of the most extensive anti-militancy efforts in recent times. According to sources, two to three militants are still believed to be holed up in the area.

“Elite Para forces, aided by drone surveillance and thermal imaging equipment, are actively scanning the rugged terrain. Senior police and army officers are supervising the high-stakes operation on the ground,” official sources said.

They added that the difficult topography and the possibility of more militants hiding in the forest are prompting a cautious, step-by-step approach by the forces.

Further details are awaited as the operation continues.
