Kulgam, 05 May:The Irrigation Department in Kulgam has initiated a large-scale river and canal cleaning drive to ensure an uninterrupted water supply for agricultural and horticultural landowners ahead of the upcoming farming season.

The operation is part of a broader strategy aimed at improving water management and increasing agricultural productivity in the region. Workers have begun clearing silt, debris, and other obstructions that hinder the natural flow of water, which is essential for efficient irrigation.

Speaking to media, Executive Engineer Irrigation Kulgam, Parvaz Ahmad Naik, said, “We have started the cleaning work in rivers and canals across Kulgam, Shopian, and Anantnag districts. This initiative is vital for ensuring that farmers, especially those cultivating paddy, have access to sufficient water.”

Naik also confirmed that illegal constructions along the riverbanks and canals have been removed to restore natural water channels. “Our primary focus is to support paddy cultivation by enhancing the flow and availability of water through proper canal maintenance,” he added.

This cleanup effort is expected to significantly benefit the farming community, which relies heavily on timely and adequate irrigation during the crop-growing season.
