Chattabal, Kulgam – May 6: Local Residents of Chattabal in south Kashmir’s Kulgam district have expressed deep concern over the worsening condition of the road near the Chattabal Bypass Bridge. They have appealed to the district administration to carry out immediate repairs to avert further accidents and potential loss of life.

In a symbolic act underscoring the gravity of the situation, a local individual placed a flag in the middle of the damaged road to warn commuters of the hazard. The road has developed a large pothole or sinkhole, making it extremely risky for both motorists and pedestrians.

According to residents, this stretch of road has witnessed multiple accidents over the past year, some resulting in serious injuries and even fatalities. Despite repeated pleas to the concerned authorities, the condition continues to worsen, posing a daily threat to travelers.

When contacted, Prince Ahmad, Assistant Executive Engineer (AEE) of the Roads & Buildings (R&B) Division Kulgam, acknowledged the issue. “We have already sent an official notice to the PHE Division Kulgam,” he stated. “The damage occurred due to a leakage from a water supply pipe beneath the road. Repair work will proceed once the leakage issue is resolved.”

Locals are now urging both the R&B and PHE departments to work in coordination to expedite the repair process. They have also appealed to the Deputy Commissioner of Kulgam to intervene directly, warning that further delays could result in more accidents and potential fatalities.
