Kulgam, May 17: A one-day workshop of the District Level Coordination Committee (DLCC) was held today in Kulgam under the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act (COTPA), 2003, with the objective of strengthening tobacco control initiatives and enhancing enforcement mechanisms across the district.

The event brought together key stakeholders including officials from the district administration, police, health department, education sector, and civil society organizations. The workshop served as a platform for in-depth discussions on the implementation of COTPA and strategies to ensure tobacco-free public spaces, especially around schools and healthcare institutions.

During his address, Additional Deputy Commissioner Kulgam, Viqar Ahmed Giri, emphasized the serious health risks linked to tobacco consumption and urged coordinated efforts from all sectors to achieve effective implementation of the Act.

Experts at the workshop delivered insightful presentations on the legal, health, and social aspects of tobacco control, while participants actively engaged in interactive sessions addressing enforcement challenges and the role of community participation.

The workshop concluded with a collective pledge by participants to work towards a tobacco-free Kulgam, reinforcing the district’s commitment to promoting public health and safer environments.
