Kulgam, July 4: A one-day workshop on the Right to Information (RTI) Act was held on Friday at the Rest House Kulgam, organized by the CPI(M) unit of Kulgam. The event aimed to promote awareness and understanding of the RTI Act, particularly among grassroots activists.
The workshop witnessed the participation of several notable figures, including India’s first Chief Information Commissioner, Wajahat Habibullah, who emphasized the importance of empowering citizens through the effective use of the RTI Act. “The main aim of this workshop is to educate and empower activists about the provisions of the RTI Act so that its implementation reaches the grassroots level,” he said.
Also present at the event were senior CPI(M) leader and MLA Kulgam M.Y. Tarigami, Irfan Hafiz Lone, Director of the Commonwealth Human Rights Initiative (CHRI) Delhi Venkatesh Nayak, CPI(M) State Secretary and DDC Qaimoh Mohd Abbas Rather, along with several prominent RTI activists.
Speakers at the event stressed the need for transparency, accountability, and active citizen participation in governance. They highlighted the RTI Act as a vital tool in the fight against corruption and in ensuring government accountability.
The workshop concluded with an interactive session, where participants discussed the challenges in accessing information and strategies to overcome them.
