Jammu, May 8:
In a major security breach late Thursday night, multiple Pakistani drones attempted to infiltrate Indian airspace with the apparent objective of targeting the high-security Jammu airport. The incident triggered high alert across the region as sirens blared and a city-wide blackout was enforced to counter the potential threat.
Eyewitnesses reported seeing several red blinking lights across the night sky, believed to be drones maneuvering toward strategic locations in Jammu. These aerial intrusions set off panic among residents, who reported hearing loud explosions and the rapid deployment of security forces.
According to defence sources, the Indian Armed Forces responded swiftly. The elite anti-aircraft units and Quick Reaction Teams (QRTs) were activated immediately. Multiple drones were successfully intercepted and brought down before they could reach their intended targets.
India's formidable S-400 Triumf air defence system, which was recently deployed in sensitive border regions, is reported to have played a key role in tracking and neutralizing the drones. The S-400, known for its ability to detect and destroy aerial threats including stealth aircraft, ballistic missiles, and UAVs from a range of up to 400 km, was on high alert during the incursion.
Security agencies believe the drones may have been equipped for surveillance or potential payload delivery, although the exact nature of their equipment is under investigation. Forensic analysis and debris recovery operations are currently underway in areas where the drones were downed.
Top defence officials held an emergency review meeting following the incident. Intelligence sources suggest the drone activity could be part of a larger attempt by hostile elements to test India's border security and air defence readiness.
No casualties or damages have been reported so far. However, the Indian Air Force and other defence units remain on high alert, with increased aerial surveillance along the India-Pakistan border.
This is not the first time that drones have been used for cross-border provocation. In recent years, Indian security forces have intercepted several Pakistani drones attempting to drop weapons or carry out reconnaissance missions in Punjab and Jammu regions.
The Ministry of Defence is expected to release an official statement shortly.
