KULGAM, JULY 30: Residents and shopkeepers in the Chawalgam area of Kulgam have raised concerns over unfinished roadwork at both ends of a newly constructed bridge, urging the Roads and Buildings (R&B) Division Kulgam to promptly macadamize the approaches to ensure safety and prevent property damage.

Though the bridge was completed a few months ago, the unpaved approaches are now causing unforeseen issues. Locals report that loose stones and gravel from the ends of the bridge are getting wedged under passing vehicles and being flung into nearby market areas, breaking glass windows and damaging shopfronts.

“We were happy when the bridge was completed, thinking it would make our lives easier,” said a local shopkeeper. “But now, we’re suffering losses due to broken displays and damaged glass panels. It has turned into a safety hazard for pedestrians too.”

The traders also warned of the potential for road accidents as the uneven and slippery surface poses a risk to two-wheelers and pedestrians, especially during rains.

Prince Ahmad, Assistant Executive Engineer (AEE) of the R&B Division Kulgam, acknowledged the issue and assured swift action once administrative approvals are received.

“We are thankful to the business community and residents who cooperated during the construction phase,” Ahmad said. “The macadamization of both ends of the bridge is already part of the project scope. We are waiting for final clearance, after which the work will be executed quickly.”

Residents have requested the department to treat the matter as urgent to prevent further property damage and avert any untoward incidents.
