Polythene is a hydra headed monster.
Despite bans and awareness campaigns, the polythene monster continues to plague Kashmir. The people of Kashmir remain largely unaware of the devastating impacts of polythene, and its use persists unabated. Shopkeepers, street vendors, and customers alike seem to have no qualms about using polythene bags, which poses a serious threat to the environment.
As a matter of fact,
Polythene is a hazard of epic proportions, damaging the environment and agriculture. Its use is rampant across the valley, with witnesses revealing that the ban is often flouted. The menace of polythene is back to worry the people of Kashmir, with its use being a common sight in both rural and urban areas.
The blanket ban imposed over a decade ago seems to have had little impact, with shopkeepers and vendors openly providing polythene bags to customers for carrying goods and eatables. The trend of using polythene without questioning its consequences has become alarmingly prevalent.
It's time for the people of Kashmir to awaken to the monster impacts of polythene and take collective action to mitigate its effects. The authorities must also enforce the ban more effectively and promote eco-friendly alternatives to polythene. Until then, the polythene menace will continue to threaten the environment and the future of Kashmir.
