Kulgam, July 31: Waste segregation sheds installed near waterbodies and alongside the main road in Laroo area of South Kashmir's Kulgam district have become a growing health and safety concern for local residents, particularly endangering school-going children and senior citizens.

Locals from Laroo expressed strong resentment over the unattended and overflowing waste at the segregation shed located near the main road. The accumulation of garbage not only emits a foul smell but also poses a risk of disease outbreak and road accidents, they said.

"The waste dumped so close to the water source and main road is hazardous. It’s becoming a life threat for pedestrians, especially our children who walk to school and the elderly," said a local resident.

The aggrieved residents have appealed to the Deputy Commissioner (DC) Kulgam and Assistant Commissioner Development (ACD) Kulgam to intervene and remove the waste from the site at the earliest.

Responding to the public outcry, Additional Commissioner Development (ACD) Kulgam, Bilal Ahmad, told media, “We have taken serious note of the issue. Immediate action will be taken and the waste will be cleared from the segregation shed soon.”

Residents hope that the administration will not only clear the existing waste but also consider relocating the segregation sheds to a more appropriate location away from public pathways and water sources.
