Geneva May 20 2025: Member states of the World Health Organization (WHO) have backed a resolution to adopt a historic Pandemic Agreement aimed at improving global coordination in preventing and responding to future health crises.
The resolution will be formally discussed at the World Health Assembly today, followed by statements from world leaders. The agreement, developed over three years, outlines frameworks for collaboration, equitable access to health products, and the establishment of a Pathogen Access and Benefit Sharing (PABS) system.
Under the pact, pharmaceutical companies are expected to allocate 20% of their real-time production of vaccines and therapeutics during health emergencies to WHO for equitable distribution.
WHO Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus lauded the effort, saying the accord will make the global community as “healthier and safer” in the face of future pandemics.
