NEW DELHI:

Aadhaar based face authentication has crossed the 200 crore transaction mark, the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) announced, describing the milestone as a significant achievement in India’s digital identity landscape. The number of transactions has doubled in just six months, highlighting the growing adoption of the technology for secure and contactless identity verification across the country.

According to UIDAI, the Aadhaar Face Authentication service enables instant, paperless, and contactless verification by matching an individual’s live facial image with the photograph stored in the Aadhaar database. All one needs to conduct the required process is a device with an internet connection and a camera, and that is why different industries may easily implement it.

Bhuvnesh Kumar, UIDAI Chief Executive Officer, said the milestone shows the growing confidence in the Aadhaar secure and inclusive system. Exceeding 200 crore face authentication transactions is a testament to the scalability, security, and convenience the Aadhaar provides. According to him, the technology is empowering both service providers and even the citizens by facilitating fast and efficient identity verification without using any papers.”

Areas Like banking, telecommunication, education, welfare schemes etc are widely using face authentication. It enables beneficiaries to receive services without having physical ID cards which, in turn, would decrease the paperwork and chance of identity theft. The technology has been adopted by government departments as well as the secluded organisations in the determination of trying to streamline service delivery and proper identification of the beneficiaries.

Another major advantage of Aadhaar face authentication is that it enables people to have their identity remotely verified; thus it could be particularly useful in rural and underserved areas where physical identification may be difficult. Data security standards are also fully attained in the system where personal information is safeguarded in the authentication process.

UIDAI has also been aggressively marketing face authentication usage with many initiatives such as integration with mobile apps and service portals. The agency has underlined that the technology would not be used to eliminate other means of Aadhaar authentication like fingerprint and iris scan, which were more flexible to the user.

According to industry experts, the high rate of growth in the number of transactions has been an indication of the rising number of digital consumers in India. The doubling of the usage in half a year is being explained by the enhancement of the awareness, more convenient access to technology as well as by the growth of service based on the Aadhaar verification.

With over 1.3 billion Aadhaar holders in the country, the scope for further growth in face authentication transactions remains significant. UIDAI has indicated that it will continue to work with stakeholders to expand its use cases and ensure the service is accessible to all sections of society.

The 200 crore transaction milestone underscores Aadhaar’s evolving role as a cornerstone of India’s digital infrastructure, combining speed, security, and inclusivity in identity verification.
