New Delhi:
Union Home Minister Amit Shah chaired a high-level meeting in Delhi to examine the progress of enforcement of three newly enacted criminal laws in the entire country. The meeting deliberated upon preparations, training, and coordination that are needed for easy enforcement of these laws.
Senior government officials from the Ministry of Home Affairs, Delhi Police, and lawyers were present at the meeting. They deliberated on major modifications in the new legislation and how to ensure that police officers, judges, and legal personnel are adequately trained before the laws take effect.
The three new pieces of legislation—Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (which substitutes the Indian Penal Code), Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (which substitutes the Code of Criminal Procedure), and Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam (which substitutes the Indian Evidence Act)—seek to give India's criminal justice system a modern look.
Amit Shah emphasized the need for timely training and awareness campaigns so that the judiciary and law enforcement are adequately prepared to put the changes into action. He also requested officials to ensure that the public is aware of their rights and responsibilities under the new laws.
The Home Minister mentioned that the objective of the new legislations is to render the justice system quicker, equitable, and more friendly towards people. He further mentioned that cooperation between the central government and states is key to successful implementation.
The meeting is given as the government is set to implement the new legislations in the next few months. Further review meetings are planned in other states in order to facilitate a smooth pan-India transition.
