The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for heavy snowfall and rain in Himachal Pradesh on February 20. The warning indicates severe weather, especially in high-elevation areas, as a new western disturbance approaches the region
Several places in Lahaul-Spiti, Kinnaur, Kullu, Chamba and Shimla districts may witness heavy to very heavy snowfall; Heavy rain and thundershowers may occur over lower and mid-hill areas including Mandi, Kangra and Solan districts. The IMD has warned of landslides, road blockages and disruption of essential services in areas where snow and waterlogging will build up.
Half a dozen organizations have been put on red alert to ensure the safety of people in vulnerable areas. The general public is also requested to exercise caution and avoid unnecessary travel. Travelers and trekkers in snow-covered areas are advised to check weather updates before traveling to high snowfall areas. The administration is on high alert, and disaster response teams, snow clearing machines and emergency services are on standby to deal with any disturbance.
Also, temperatures are likely to drop further due to snowfall, which means cold front is likely in various parts of the state. Farmers have been requested to protect crops from dampness and other types of damage.
In the wake of a string of recent snowfalls in Himachal Pradesh that disrupted normal life, road connectivity and power supply were disrupted at several places. The state government has assured that all precautionary measures are in place and the situation will be safe for residents and tourists.
