The investigation into the mysterious death of Assamese singer Zubeen Garg has taken a significant step forward, with the Special Investigation Team (SIT) filing a chargesheet against four individuals in connection with his murder. Garg, who died in Singapore on September 19 while attending the North East India Festival, had reportedly drowned under suspicious circumstances.
Garg’s wife, Garima, welcomed the chargesheet, emphasizing that the investigation was conducted based on the FIR filed by their family. She expressed confidence in the judicial process, stating, “We have faith in our nation’s judiciary and want the guilty to be punished accordingly.” Garima added that Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has suggested requesting a fast-track court for a speedy resolution, and she stressed the urgency of delivering justice for the singer.
The SIT has named four accused, including Garg’s secretary Siddhartha Sharma and festival organiser Shyamkanu Mahanta, as charged with murder. Additionally, two of Garg’s band members, Shekhar Jyoti Goswami and Amritprava Mahanta, have also been implicated. Meanwhile, Garg’s personal security officers, Nandeswar Bora and Prabin Baishya, face charges of criminal conspiracy and criminal breach of trust for allegedly misappropriating funds.
The singer’s tragic death has shaken Assam, with widespread public outrage and calls for accountability. Garima said the investigation was conducted as per expectations and highlighted that the family has complete faith in the authorities handling the case.
As the judicial proceedings begin, the people of Assam are hoping for swift justice in what has been described as a shocking and “plain and simple” murder of one of the state’s most beloved cultural icons.
