BJP Set to Decide on New National President

07 June, 2025:

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is now focusing on selecting its next national president. Although no official announcement has been made yet, sources indicate that internal discussions are in progress, and the process might commence by mid-June.

The BJP has already concluded organisational elections in most states, a necessary step under the party’s constitution for electing the national president. The recent appointment of 70 district presidents in Uttar Pradesh has further increased the speculation that a decision from the central leadership could be announced soon, according to sources.

Though it is not clear if JP Nadda will contest elections once again, reports suggest that there are three names doing rounds, each bringing a different blend of experience, caste identity, and regional weight.

Among the frontrunners for the BJP's national president post, Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan is the first name doing the rounds. A prominent OBC leader from Odisha, Pradhan is known for his strong organisational skills and close ties with the central leadership.

Another key contender is Shivraj Singh Chouhan, the former Madhya Pradesh chief minister and current Union minister. Widely regarded as a mass leader, Chouhan brings with him deep grassroots experience.

The third name in the spotlight is Manohar Lal Khattar, who recently moved from his role as Haryana chief minister to the Union cabinet. His candidature is seen as a symbol of continuity and seasoned administrative leadership.

These three leaders are currently considered the top choices under serious consideration by the BJP leadership.

JP Nadda has been serving as the BJP’s national president since January 2020. His tenure was extended to guide the party through the 2024 general elections. Now that this objective has been achieved, discussions around a leadership transition have gathered pace.

A central election committee is likely to be formed soon to supervise the entire election process, including nomination filing, scrutiny, and voting if required.

At this stage, it remains uncertain whether Nadda will pursue a second full term or if the party will move forward with a new face at the helm.
