In a major effort to ease traffic congestion and enhance connectivity in the national capital, the central government has approved infrastructure projects worth Rs 24,000 crore. The decision was made during a high-level meeting chaired by Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari on Wednesday. Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena, BJP MP Manoj Tiwari, MCD Mayor Raja Iqbal Singh, and other senior officials were present.
Over the past years, the central government has approved road projects worth ₹1.25 lakh crore for the national capital, leading to key connectivity developments. These include an underground tunnel from Shiv Murti to Nelson Mandela Road, an elevated corridor from Sarai Kale Khan to IGI Airport, the Delhi–Katra–Amritsar Expressway, and a 20km new road from Inderlok metro station to Sonepat via the Munak canal. The Delhi CM Rekha Gupta announced this on Wednesday.
Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said feasibility is being assessed for a tunnel from Sarai Kale Khan to Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport. Lieutenant Governor V K Saxena, Minister of State for Road Transport Harsh Malhotra, and Delhi ministers attended a meeting reviewing progress on ongoing National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) projects in the capital.
Gupta highlighted that the "double-engine" government, BJP in power at both the Centre and Delhi, is greatly benefiting the city. She noted that NHAI projects worth ₹35,000 crore are currently underway in Delhi, while projects worth ₹64,000 crore have been completed, expressing gratitude to the Centre.
The chief minister also shared that NHAI has approved road overbridge (RoB) and road underbridge (RuB) projects worth ₹150 crore for Delhi.
